Child Support
Child support is the financial support that one parent must pay to the other for the support of a child. Both parents have an obligation to provide financial support. In Maryland, child support guidelines presumptively apply for parents whose combined gross incomes are underneath a certain threshold. As of July 1, 2022, the guidelines presumptively apply for parents whose combined, gross, monthly incomes are $30,000 or less. Child support must be decided along with child custody. Whether or not the guidelines apply, child support is a needs-based analysis, and the determination is influenced by a number of factors, including the expenses the parents incur for a child, the child’s custody and access schedule, and the parents’ incomes.
